Retirement should be a time when you receive continuous monetary funds that allow you to enjoy yourself, after having worked for many years. The earlier you start saving, the sooner you will benefit from compound interest. Retirement products and services include:
- Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs and Non-Registered):
- GICs
- Indexed Linked GICs
- Segregated Funds (guaranteed funds, guaranteed death benefits)
There are many purposes for RRSPs. Examples include:
- To allow yourself to save enough money on a tax-deferred basis, in order to provide a retirement income later
- To reduce the tax payable on last years income
- To set money aside for education (Lifelong Learning Plan)
- To minimize taxes on the purchase of your FIRST home
- Annuities (monthly income mainly derived from Registered Pension Plans):
- Variable Deferred Annuities
- Fixed Interest Deferred Annuities
- Immediate Income Annuities
- Special Annuity Packages
- Tax Qualified Plans
- RRIFs (Registered Retirement Income Fund): Fund established by a financial institution, to provide retirement income to an individual. Setup by directly transferring money from registered retirement savings plans or registered pension plans. The holder of the RRIF must withdraw a set minimum portion of the money in the fund annually.
- LIFs (Life Income Fund): Fund designed to provide income using your Locked-In RSP or pension savings.
- LRIFs (Locked-In Retirement Income Fund): Investment vehicle used to hold and payout pension funds upon retirement. As opposed to the LIF, there is no requirement to convert your LRIF to a life annuity at age 80.
- Estate and Trust Planning: Help build assets for future generations of families. Plan your estate by preparing a will, living trust, health care directives and the like.
- Income Tax Planning: Strategies to help you keep more of what you make by saving taxes, protecting your assets, and investing towards your goals.
